Remedial Success Continues with Coupled Excavation and ISCR Soil Blending

In Situ Chemical Reduction Soil Blending + Excavation Provides Effective Remedial Solution

A former print shop and dry cleaner located in a residential Ocean City, New Jersey neighborhood was contaminated due to previous business activities. The primary contaminants of concern included tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-1,2 DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). A limited source excavation was previously completed within the building, though chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) remained in both soil and groundwater. To complete site remediation, a second, larger source excavation coupled with the addition of an in situ chemical reduction (ISCR) technology, specifically Provect-IR®, was utilized to remediate residual sorbed and dissolved phase CVOC contamination.

The Provect-IR® was blended into the base of the excavation to ensure contact with the impacted soil and groundwater for a robust application. Site geology consisted of sands to a depth of 5 feet below ground surface (ft bgs) with a peat layer ranging from 5 to 8 ft bgs. Groundwater was tidally influenced and encountered at an average depth of 4 ft bgs. Following excavation and Provect-IR® soil mixing activities, significant contaminant reductions and predictable changes in the geochemistry were observed, including greater than 96% total CVOC reductions at both target monitoring wells. Furthermore, the post-application geochemistry (e.g., negative ORPs, neutral pH, low DO) indicates that additional CVOC reductions will continue to occur. Additional project details including both pre- and post-treatment geochemical and CVOC data can be found by clicking on the read more button below.
